The cup labelled ‘Domestos’ immediately fogged up the top of the cup.

My Project was to determine which one of the following would clean a soiled cloth the most: Domestos, Napi-San and Soap Powder or Napi-San itself.

These are the results and the winner is the one on the very left, which is Domestos.

It turns out that the Domestos clearly won, Napi-San and Soap Powder came second and Napi-San by itself came last. My hypothesis was proved RIGHT! I Thought Domestos would win because it is a powerful bleaching agent. I had my doubts for Napi-San because I observed some of my clothes that it washed and they looked clean ,but some stains remained. So with this information, I made a educated guess and assumed Napi-San and Soap Powder would do a better job than Napi-San itself.

Robert Falcon Scott

March 9, 2009

Robert Falcon ScottRobert Falcon Scott  was a British naval officer and Antarctic explorer. In 1911, a British trip was led by Robert Falcon Scott. He reached the  South Pole 5 weeks after Amundsen.Scott had led 2 trips to the South Pole and died on the way back of 2nd trip becasue his team was wearing wool instead of heavy down parkas. Robert was also the first man to fly in a hot air balloon over Antarctica. Scott and 2 members of his crew tried to cross an ice shelf, pulled on a sled by 19 dogs.Lack of Vitamin C-also called Scurvy-made them ill and so they had to return. Soon after in 1903 September, most of the crew returned to England safely, whereas Scott and a few others remained behind to explore some more until 1904, September. He returned safely but still wanted to visit Antarctica again soon.

2nd trip:

Robert Falcon Scott set out to South Pole again on June 1st,1910. He was riding on a ship called the ‘Terra Nova’.He was racing another explorer by the name of Roald Amundsen to be the first man to land on the South Pole. They finally reached the Ross Island on January 4,1911.From there they set out on sleds, ponies and motorised vehicles. The ponies and vehicles were abandoned in a few days. While they were still crossing a glacier called the Beardmore glacier, which was less than 200 miles from their destination, Amundsen reached the South Pole,Jan 4,1912. Scott’s team reached oh Jan 18 1912. They were bitterly disappointed to find Amundsen’s Norwegian flag. They were exhausted, freezing, disappointed and suffering from scurvy by the time they were set to return. On the way back, members of the crew started dying and the last camp they set up was on March 11th,1912. It was 11miles from the depot, where they would have gotten supplies. A raging blizzard stopped them from reaching the supply depot, killing all the remaining crew members. Their dead bodies were found in their sleeping bags, by a rescue party on Nov 12th, 1912.

Sir Ernest Shackleton

March 9, 2009

Sir Ernest ShackletonSir Ernest Shackleton made three trips to the South Pole. The first one was in 1901-1902 with Robert Falcon Scott in a ship called the ‘Discovery’.When he arrived almost no-one had been there. He was born on Feb 15th,1874.On his first trip,he was sent home early for health grounds. Disappointed, but determined, he made another trip on 1907 and in this trip he lead his own British Antarctic Expedition. His main trip was on 1914.In this journey he sailed in a ship called ‘Endurance’.After Scott died in 1912 after being defeated by Amundsen, Shackleton decided to tackle the challenge of Antarctica in a different way.He attempted to cross the icy continent from one side to the other, through the South Pole.Other members of the expedition climbed over the Mountain Erebus and reached the South Magnetic Pole. Dragging sleds and using ponies, Shackleton himself lead a party which reached to only 97miles from Pole.Although there had not been much Government help beforehand,Shackleton recieved a hero’s welcome when he returned. He died on 5th Jan,1922.
